Entry 8 - April 28, 2016
1. What action did you take to achieve your goal? I had a three hours long crochet lesson with Michelle and learned how to hold the yarn and hook and do basic crochet stitches, including: slip stitch, chain stitch, single stitch, double crochet, and treble crochet. 2. Which ATL skills did you use while taking this action? (Consider: self-management skills, thinking skills, communication skills, and social skills.) Social skill: Michelle wanted to teach me a lot of fancy things like how to make a heart or a flower, but I just wanted to focus on basic stitches so I could build a solid foundation of essential crochet skills. This meant I had to negotiate goals and limitations with the teacher to find a target that suited both of us. It was awkward having to turn down some of Michelle's ideas, but I'm glad I did because I needed to slow down the pace of the lesson to practice the basics over and over again. |
Entry 12 - May 2, 2016
1. What action did you take to achieve your goal? I made five granny squares - three following Bella Coco's tutorial on YouTube, and two totally on my own. 2. Which ATL skills did you use while taking this action? (Consider: self-management skills, thinking skills, communication skills, and social skills.) Thinking skill: I really liked using a YouTube tutorial because I could pause and replay the video as many times as I needed, but one main drawback was that I couldn't ask the teacher any questions. As such, I had to find and study patterns in my stitching to make inferences and draw conclusions about when to make three chains (at corners) and when to make four (when you start a new row with the last treble crochet of a section -- 3 chains for the treble and 1 chain to move over to the next section). |
Entry 13 - May 8, 2016
1. What action did you take to achieve your goal? I made four grey granny squares this week (4% of my final product). 2. Which ATL skills did you use while taking this action? (Consider: self-management skills, thinking skills, communication skills, and social skills.) Self-management skill: I figure that if I crochet just four granny squares each week, I'll easily reach my goal of making 15 squares by the end of May. This is because crocheting four squares per week is an extremely manageable task that I can tend to for 15-20 minutes each day or all at once in a 2-3 hours session over the weekend. This tactic of breaking down the month's goal into even smaller targets is an example of me using a planning and/or organization strategy to manage and complete tasks. |
